8,535 Pounds of Dead Batteries Collected!

High school students across the District of Nipissing collected an amazing 8,535 pounds, (4,305 kilograms), of dead batteries in our Sixth Annual Used Household Battery Collection Competition.  That is equivalent to almost 200,000 AA size batteries and represents a 55% increase over last year.

Congratulations to the students of F. J. McElligott Secondary School in Mattawa for collecting the most batteries per student and winning first prize of $500.  The students of F. J. McElligott collected 3.97 pounds (1.80 kilograms) of batteries per student.  Northern Secondary School of Sturgeon Falls won a second place prize of $200 by collecting 3.78 pounds (1.71 kilograms) of batteries per student.

While the battery collection competition diverts tons of batteries from the local landfill, it also helps to raise the awareness of thousands of students and their friends and families about environmental issues and, in particular, about the proper disposal of hazardous waste.  In North Bay, batteries and other hazardous waste should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 112 Patton Street.

Over the past six years, Nipissing District high school students have collected over 35,000 pounds of used household batteries as follows:
