10,728 Pounds of Dead Batteries Collected!

Congratulations are extended to Nbisiing Secondary School of North Bay for once again winning our annual Used Household Battery Collection Competition.  The 88 students who attend Nbisiing collected 1,355 pounds (615 kilograms) of batteries.  That is an awesome 15.4 pounds (7 kilograms) of batteries per student.

Second place went to F. J. McElligott Secondary School of Mattawa for collecting 885 pounds (401 kilograms) of used batteries.  That works out to 8.4 pounds (3.8 kilograms) of batteries per student.

Over six thousand students from ten high schools across Nipissing District collected 10,728 pounds (4,866 kilograms) of batteries.  This represents a 19% increase over last year.  It is more than five tons of batteries and is the equivalent of over 250,000 AA size batteries.

Special mention must go to the students of Pinewood Public School of North Bay who organized their own separate used battery collection competition.  Students at Pinewood collected 867 pounds (393 kilograms) of batteries.  That works out to 3.9 pounds (1.8 kilograms) of batteries per student which would have put them in third place in the high school competition.  Good work Pinewood!

While the battery collection competition diverts thousands of batteries from the landfill sites, the primary purpose of the competition is to raise the awareness about the proper disposal of hazardous waste.  In North Bay, batteries and other hazardous waste should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 112 Patton Street.

Over the past seven years, Nipissing District high school students have collected over 46,365 pounds (21,466 kilograms) of used household batteries.

Nipissing Environmental Watch and the Lake Nipissing Stewardship Council would like to thank the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation for generously funding this competition.
